The Path from A to Z
Basic Requirements
Legal age, high school diploma, residence/domicile in Italy, knowledge of at least 2 foreign languages (including one EU language). No university degree required by law.
Preparation
Study of Italian and European regulations, tourism geography, transport techniques, art history. The Tour Leader Guide 2026 covers the entire updated program.
Regional Exam
Written + oral exam held by the Region or Province. Commissions have discretion over the program. Prepare with the simulator featuring 209 questions.
License
After passing the exam, you obtain the license (qualification card) that authorizes you to operate throughout the national territory and abroad.

AT vs Guida Turistica: Le Differenze
Tour Leader (AT)
Accompanies the group from start to finish. Manages logistics, emergencies, suppliers. Operates throughout the national territory and abroad. CANNOT give guided tours in museums.
Tourist Guide
Specialist of a specific site. Conducts guided tours in museums and monuments. Specific regional certification. Does not manage travel logistics.
How Much You Can Earn
Indicative 2026 rates (Rome). Evening and holiday surcharge: +20%. Meals, accommodation, and transportation charged to the client. For the most in-demand professionals with specializations and rare languages, rates can be significantly higher. See detailed rates.
