Museum Night 2027: What Opens in Rome, Florence, Milan and Naples (and What Time to Go)

One evening a year, in May, Europe’s museums stay open late into the night. In Italy the European Night of Museums is coordinated by the Ministry of Culture, under the patronage of UNESCO, the Council of Europe and ICOM, and takes the form of extraordinary evening openings at state museums for the symbolic price of €1. The 2026 edition, the twenty-second, was held on Saturday 23 May. The 2027 date is not yet official: this guide explains how it works, what usually opens in Rome, Florence, Milan and Naples, and what time to go.

This is part of our complete calendar of free museum days in Italy; its September sibling is the European Heritage Days.

Two readings from our own network on the same ground: ItalyPlanner’s guide to Rome’s museums and the Capitoline Museums page on EstateRomana. The way we work with tour operators and colleagues is set out in our network manifesto.

When: the 2027 date

The European Night of Museums was born in France and is held every year on a Saturday in May, close to International Museum Day (18 May). In 2026 it was Saturday 23 May. The 2027 date will be announced by the Ministry of Culture, which publishes the calendar of events on its website in the preceding weeks; we will update this article as soon as it is official. To plan prudently, keep Saturdays 15 and 22 May 2027 free until confirmation arrives.

How it works

WhatRule
Admissionextraordinary evening openings for €1 at participating state museums and sites; free admissions provided by law remain valid
Hoursset by each venue: typically from 7–8 pm until 11 pm–midnight, with last entry an hour earlier
Related eventsconcerts, guided visits, special routes: also free or €1
Bookingwhere required by the individual museum; at major sites often recommended or compulsory
Civic and private museumstake part with their own programmes; the symbolic €1 applies to state venues

What usually opens, city by city

The list changes every year and should be read on the Ministry’s website. The profile, however, is stable and allows planning.

Rome

The National Museums of the city of Rome (Pantheon and Castel Sant’Angelo first of all), the National Roman Museum in its various seats, the National Galleries of Ancient Art, the National Gallery of Modern Art, the Etruscan Museum at Villa Giulia. The Colosseum Archaeological Park takes part in some editions with limited-number evening routes. The Capitoline Museums and the other civic museums usually have their own programme.

Florence

The great state venues — Uffizi, Palazzo Pitti, Galleria dell’Accademia, Bargello, Medici Chapels — take part depending on the edition; the city’s civic museums organise their own night. With May crowds, Saturday evening is among the busiest of the year in the centre.

Milan

Pinacoteca di Brera, Leonardo’s Last Supper (very few places and compulsory booking), the Archaeological Museum and the city’s state venues; civic museums and private foundations often join with their own hours.

Naples

National Archaeological Museum, Capodimonte, Castel Sant’Elmo and the Certosa di San Martino, Palazzo Reale; in Campania the Royal Palace of Caserta usually takes part too and, in some editions, the Vesuvian archaeological parks with evening routes.

What time to go

The rule is simple: at the evening opening or in the last hour. The central band, between 9 and 10:30 pm, is when the major sites peak. Anyone who wants the Pinacoteca di Brera or Palazzo Massimo in humane conditions arrives at 7 pm sharp, or enters in the last available slot. For the Pantheon and Castel Sant’Angelo, where the line wraps around the monument, the last slot is almost always the best choice.

For the high-end guest

For the demanding client the Night of Museums is an experience to observe, not to do: the real proposal is a private evening visit on any other day, with the museum closed to the public. The May night helps the advisor understand which venues have the organisation — lighting, security, staff — to open in the evening, and build the relationship that makes a reserved opening possible. If the client is in Italy that evening, choose a minor state venue in a quiet art city, where the night is a pleasure rather than a line.
