Campania is the region where the free first Sunday weighs most: Pompeii, Herculaneum, the MANN, Capodimonte, the Royal Palace of Caserta, Paestum and the Phlegraean Fields are all state sites and open free on the first Sunday of the month. It is a huge advantage for the independent traveller and a serious problem for anyone leading a group. This guide gathers the calendar to March 2027, the real rules site by site, the Campania Artecard and the advice for not turning a free day into a lost one.

This is part of our complete calendar of free museum days in Italy; for the general rules see how the free first Sunday works; for 19 September in Naples, the Feast of San Gennaro.

The real rules, site by site
Pompeii, Oplontis, Boscoreale, Stabiae
At the Archaeological Park of Pompeii free entry applies to all sites. In recent editions there is no named ticket and visitors go straight to the turnstiles, but the cap of 20,000 visitors a day remains: on the free Sunday in May 2026 it was reached. With a group, the only strategy is opening time; alternatively, Oplontis and Boscoreale, extraordinary and almost empty.
Herculaneum
The Archaeological Park of Herculaneum takes part in the free Sunday. The site is smaller and more intense than Pompeii: the morning of the free Sunday fills quickly, but on winter days it remains one of the region’s best choices for a group.
MANN – National Archaeological Museum of Naples
The MANN takes part regularly. It is large, well organised and absorbs crowds; the free Sunday at opening is an excellent experience even in high season. Closed on Tuesdays: keep it in mind when planning the week.
Capodimonte, Certosa di San Martino, Castel Sant’Elmo, Royal Palace
Naples’ state museums take part with their own arrangements; Capodimonte, with its park, handles crowds well. Weekly closures vary from venue to venue: always check before fixing the Sunday.
Royal Palace of Caserta
Palace and Park are listed separately by the Ministry. The Park is immense and liveable even on long-weekend Sundays; the Apartments are the bottleneck. With a group: Apartments at opening, Park and English Garden afterwards.
Paestum and Velia, Phlegraean Fields
The Archaeological Park of Paestum and Velia and the Archaeological Park of the Phlegraean Fields (Baia, Cumae, Pozzuoli, the Castle of Baia museum) take part: these are the places where the free Sunday is truly a gift, with a local public and wide spaces.
Campania Artecard: when it pays
For those who do not enter free, the Campania Artecard remains the most efficient tool: according to the official portal, Napoli Artecard €27, Campania Artecard 3 days €41, Campania Artecard 7 days €43, with youth formulas (€16 and €30) and 365 annual subscriptions (Lite €26, Gold €50). It includes free entry to the first sites and reductions on the following ones, plus public transport in the day-based versions. For a group the card pays only if the programme includes at least three major sites; otherwise booked single tickets are simpler to manage.

For the high-end guest
Those who accompany demanding clients take no one to Pompeii on the first Sunday of the month. They use that Sunday for Oplontis, for the MANN at opening or for Paestum, and reserve Pompeii and the Royal Palace for weekdays with special access: visits at opening or after hours, routes through domus normally closed, entry from Porta Marina Superiore with an archaeologist guide. In Campania the true luxury is silence in places the whole world wants to see.
