On the last Sunday of every month the Vatican Museums — Sistine Chapel included — open free of charge from 9:00 to 14:00, with last entry at 12:30. It is one of Europe’s most famous free admissions and, not by chance, one of Rome’s longest lines. This guide lays out the dates to August 2027, the official exclusions, the reality of the queue along Viale Vaticano, and the alternative anyone accompanying demanding guests should know about.

This is part of our complete calendar of free museum days in Italy; for state museums see how the free first Sunday works.

The official rule
From the Vatican Museums’ website: “Every last Sunday of the month 9.00 am – 2.00 pm, last entry 12.30 pm”, with free admission. The free opening does not take place when the last Sunday coincides with Easter, with 29 June (Saints Peter and Paul), with 25 or 26 December, or with 31 December. On ordinary days the Museums are open Monday to Saturday from 8:00 to 20:00 (last entry 18:00) and closed on Sundays.

The official calendar with all closures is published each year by the Vatican Museums; the dates above follow from the general rule and the stated exclusions. The real line
Free tickets cannot be booked: entry is first come, first served through the Viale Vaticano entrance. In peak months the line starts forming well before 9:00 and wraps around the Walls; with last entry at 12:30, anyone arriving mid-morning risks being left outside. Those who get in then find the galleries and the Sistine Chapel at maximum capacity. For a group of ten or more, keeping everyone together in the line and inside is a job in itself.
For the free Sunday the Vatican Museums offer an official guided visit by reservation, sold on their ticketing portal: it is the only form of organised access provided for that morning, and availability and conditions are worth checking well in advance.
The private alternative
Those who work with high-end guests rarely choose the last Sunday of the month. The alternatives that matter are reserved openings outside public hours, early-morning slots and the exclusive formats the Vatican Museums themselves offer on dates that change from season to season. The difference is not the ticket: it is the Sistine Chapel seen in silence. The practical advice is simple: the free Sunday suits the independent traveller with time and patience; for a quality group, move the visit to a weekday with a booked ticket, or invest in a reserved opening.

For the high-end guest
- Never the last Sunday of the month, unless explicitly requested: what the free entry saves in tickets, it costs in experience.
- Book the earliest weekday slot, ideally midweek and away from long weekends.
- Consider exclusive or reserved openings when the budget allows: they are the Vatican’s true luxury product.
- Coordinate with St Peter’s Basilica, which has separate access and security checks, so the morning is not lost in two different lines.
