Two days a year, in March, the FAI – Fondo Ambiente Italiano (Italy’s National Trust) opens palaces, villas, churches, archives and institutional buildings that stay closed for the rest of the year. These are the FAI Spring Days: in 2026, the 34th edition, 780 places opened in 400 towns with 7,500 volunteers and 17,000 student guides. The 2027 edition has no official date yet; this guide explains what to expect, how it works, and how to use it intelligently for a group or a high-end guest in Rome, Tuscany and Campania.

This is part of our complete calendar of free museum days in Italy.

When: the expected date for 2027
FAI states that the Spring Days take place “traditionally on the first weekend of spring”. In 2026 they were Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 March. For 2027 the weekend consistent with that tradition is Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 March 2027, but the date should be treated as expected, not confirmed until FAI announces it: the official announcement usually comes between January and February, and the list of open places is published on FAI’s website a few weeks beforehand. We will update this article as soon as the date is official.
How it works
- Free contribution. Entry is by voluntary donation in support of FAI’s mission; there is no ticket and no fixed price.
- FAI members. Members have priority access at all places, and some openings are reserved for them. You can join on the spot at the FAI desks.
- Booking. Usually not required; for some limited-capacity places FAI indicates specific arrangements on the place’s page.
- Who guides. Visits are led by volunteers from the FAI Delegations and, at many places, by the Apprendisti Ciceroni, secondary-school students trained to tell the story of their own territory.
- Groups. FAI Days are not designed for organised tour groups: the lines are for individuals and small parties, and capacities are small. A large group must be split, or directed to the biggest venues.
What to expect in Rome, Tuscany and Campania
The lists change every year and FAI publishes them only a few weeks in advance, so naming venues now would not be serious. The profile of the openings, however, is constant and worth knowing for planning.
Rome and Lazio
In Rome the openings are dominated by institutional and diplomatic buildings normally off-limits — ministries, embassies, foreign academies, headquarters of public bodies — alongside historic villas, churches closed to regular worship and archives. They draw the longest lines of the day. Across Lazio the Delegations open villages, castles and villas in the Tuscia, the Castelli Romani and along the coast.
Tuscany
Florence usually opens private palaces and the seats of city institutions; the real value is in the provinces: Medici villas and historic estates in Chianti and the Val d’Orcia, parish churches, historic theatres and old workshops around Lucca, the Valdelsa and the Maremma, some accessible only on these two days.
Campania
Naples opens cloisters, noble palaces in the historic centre and monumental complexes that have no visiting hours the rest of the year; the season in Campania is already mild, and openings in the Cilento, Sannio and Irpinia are a chance to discover an Italy the catalogues do not know.

For the high-end guest
Those who accompany high-profile clients do not use FAI Days as a free ticket, but as a map: the list of open places reveals which private properties, bodies and institutions are willing to open their doors. Many of those doors open, on other terms and at other times, for the rest of the year too. The advisor’s job is to turn a two-day public opening into a bespoke private visit. For the weekend itself, the most elegant choice is a FAI place off the circuit — a garden, a villa, an abbey — where the public is local and the experience stays intact.
Checklist
- Mark the expected weekend (20–21 March 2027) and check FAI’s official announcement between January and February.
- Consult the list of open places as soon as it is published and read each entry: hours, shifts, capacity, any member-only reservations.
- Consider FAI membership for clients: priority access is worth more than the contribution.
- Do not bring large groups to small venues; split up or choose the major sites.
- Use the list as a basis for private proposals the rest of the year.
