Free Museums in Venice: Doge’s Palace, Ca’ Rezzonico, Accademia — the Rules

In Venice the word “free” must be handled with care. The Civic Museums of the MUVE Foundation — Doge’s Palace, Museo Correr, Ca’ Rezzonico, Ca’ Pesaro, Museo Fortuny, the Glass Museum in Murano and the others — have no free day for tourists: free entry is reserved for residents and people born in the Municipality, for statutory categories and, on the “Musei in Festa” days, for residents of the Metropolitan City. The state museums — Gallerie dell’Accademia, Ca’ d’Oro, National Archaeological Museum, Museum of Oriental Art at Ca’ Pesaro — follow the national rule of the free first Sunday of the month. This guide lays out the 2026 rules, the real prices and the sensible choices for those leading groups.

The Doge's Palace in Venice on a free admission day for civic museums

This is part of our complete calendar of free museum days in Italy; on the state first Sunday see the free first Sunday.

One reading from our own network on the same ground: ItalyPlanner on the Doge’s Palace. The way we work with tour operators and colleagues is set out in our network manifesto.

Civic Museums (MUVE): who enters free

According to the Foundation’s official website, free tickets go to: residents and people born in the Municipality of Venice; ICOM members; children aged 0 to 5; visitors with disabilities and their companion; tourist guides licensed in Italy accompanying groups or individual visitors; teachers accompanying school groups (maximum two per group); the Municipality’s Civil Service volunteers; MUVE Friend Card holders and members of certain associations (Friends of Venetian Museums and Monuments, Venice International Foundation, Venetian Heritage, Save Venice).

On the Musei in Festa days, residents of the 44 municipalities of the Metropolitan City of Venice and of Mogliano Veneto enter free at the Civic Museums, the associated museums and the exhibitions included in the ticket. Remaining 2026 dates: Thursday 3 September, Sunday 11 October, Sunday 8 November, Sunday 22 November, Sunday 13 December. They are worth knowing even for those who do not benefit: on those dates the Doge’s Palace is busier than usual.

The Doge’s Palace cannot be visited with a single ticket: the “St Mark’s Square Museums” ticket is the only one in force and includes the Correr integrated route. For a group staying two or more days, the €50 Museum Pass is almost always the best value.

State museums: the first Sunday of the month

The Gallerie dell’Accademia, Ca’ d’Oro, the National Archaeological Museum and the Museum of Oriental Art take part in the Ministry of Culture’s Domenica al Museo: free entry on the first Sunday of every month, with booking recommended or compulsory where required. The dates: 4 October, 1 November and 6 December 2026; 3 January, 7 February and 7 March 2027. The Accademia is of manageable size and the free Sunday, off season, is an excellent experience even with a group.

The sensible choices

  • With a group: Museum Pass or St Mark’s ticket bought online in advance; Doge’s Palace in the first morning slot; the Accademia on the first Sunday only from November to March.
  • Licensed guides: free entry to the Civic Museums is a right recognised by MUVE: carry your licence.
  • To avoid: the Doge’s Palace on Musei in Festa days and long weekends; the Accademia on the first Sunday in high season.
  • Access fee: remind clients that on the days set by the City, entry to the historic city for day visitors is subject to the access fee, separate from any museum ticket.

For the high-end guest

In Venice luxury is not entering free but entering when others cannot: the Doge’s Palace with the Secret Itineraries in exclusivity, the Glass Museum followed by a furnace that opens by appointment only, the Marciana behind closed doors, a private collection on the Grand Canal. The advisor uses the MUVE Friend Card for themselves and knows the foundations — Venetian Heritage, Save Venice — that open otherwise closed doors. Free days are a datum for avoiding crowds, not a destination.
